When you spend every day in the trenches, it is hard to know the way out. It is hard to see any other path than the well-worn one in front of you. Time away is essential for creative problem-solving. When is your next true vacation?

And we don’t mean when is your next day that you don’t go to the office. Because today, we take our offices with us everywhere we go. Boundaries are blurred between work and home, work and life. We can answer email everywhere. So we do. We can ‘take a quick call’ anywhere. So we do. And we teach those around us that we are always available.

How can you get out of those trenches? How can you pull away so your brain has time to rest and gain perspective? Because when you do, you will solve problems you can’t even see right now. Your business will grow. Your team will succeed. And your family will thank you.

Listen in as JoyGenea and Michelle discuss true vacations and the benefits to their businesses.

0:01 How business owners lose money not taking vacation

Hi and welcome to if heels could talk. We do have in your music and well that I completely forgot about it.  Weird it is a weird feeling on your feelings I Michelle from bad cat digital I think it was a perfect example of the morning we had yes well that’s true it has kind of been a we are coming to you today with gray..  Great effort between gas caps and computers falling into the snow has been kind of winter in Minnesota. In Winter Minnesota I was afraid like literally the computer fell out of the car and landed in the snow. When I picked it up all of it was covered in snow on one side and it was in the poorest people. Cynthia and I just I tipped it upside down and had to bring it in the office this way and wipe it all out night I was leaving work because my gas cap was frozen shut and I was out of gas like out of gas and I had to ask myself and like are we supposed to podcast today I’m just not sure and that was even funnier was the topic how we as business owners lose money not taking vacation while we just need to go back to bed.

HIGHLIGHT: How business owners lose money not taking vacation

1:52

So you can figure out how to laugh about it like this was somebody we like and it’s nice when the two people who have something to do in the morning both have a morning like this that was fine because then the whole thing just moves you know because I was just on a little mini vacation you were at you were at a time out yeah it really was it wasn’t really a vacation I guess I don’t like let’s just start their I consider vacation when you and leave and you have planned activities in like a new location that are kind of exploratory end.

HIGHLIGHT:

2:43

I don’t know I said yes all consuming and that kind of thing yeah so I left for quilt Retreat and then the first day so I left on a Thursday I was supposed to leave at like 4 and I actually didn’t end up leaving until 6:30 because all of the things happen and little tiny fires I heard from people that I haven’t gotten they know email to from for like 2 years anyways so I left late and then I had two meetings that I couldn’t move on Friday.

HIGHLIGHT:

3:22

And that’s all I was supposed to do that Friday and they end up ended up working basically most of the work day and then shutting it off around 3 which is when I would have left work what if I was here so I was actually having this dick work no it’s not but it’s because of all of the crazy things on Thursday like it really was every time I try to get out what is like it sucked me back in so it’s like it your your metaphor that you were using about being in the trenches or being at a wing and only seeing the stand in front of you standing on the ladder to get out of the trench and there’s like people pulling on my leg to pee keep me in it and all I want to do is leave you know that feeling is just.

HIGHLIGHT:

4:11 Oppressive feeling of being at a vacation but still doing a lot of stuff for work

Oppressive and you’re right it takes a lot of energy that feeling takes a lot of energy so I didn’t really have time out I did have a weekend though you had a couple days I had my weekend because I wasn’t at home so I wasn’t dealing with home stuff right about 10 on Saturday morning and I got there and you can if you’ve ever done it at something else yeah time it takes a different amount of time it really does right as you are sometimes when I leave the house I’m disconnecting at that point the phone is going to ring and I mean no no I’m not I’m not here anymore I’m not going to look at emails like I’m out of times where I get there just like you and I keep. I had to put my phone on airplane mode and girl because it was buzzing because if I weren’t you know I have the ringer off so as long as annoying but it was vibrating every email and it’s the holiday season so I’m getting a hundred emails are literally a day that are just junk so.

HIGHLIGHT: Oppressive feeling of being at a vacation but still doing a lot of stuff for work

5:34

It was group chat things and I’m in that I was getting notifications for social media notifications because Facebook reset those again and I have to change my notification settings again I mean like it was just all images buzz buzz buzz buzz buzz and everytime I Buzz.

HIGHLIGHT:

5:51 Perception on vacation or staycation becomes different since pandemic

I would get pulled out sucked out this is the perfect story thank you for giving us the perfect you are very welcome beautiful thing I listened to a really nice podcast by the Harvard Business Review I do to that’s kind of why when I saw it I went this so aligns with it and they were talking about vacations and how the pan they were talking about the one of the things they brought up with that how how we perceive vacation and how a staycation is really no longer able to be a vacation because we’ve worked from home for so long correct and working from home they’re finding also adjusted our work hours totally we started earlier because otherwise later time and we went later and so now we are continuing to do this right and it’s even worse.

HIGHLIGHT: Perception on vacation or staycation becomes different since pandemic

6:42 82% people work while on vacation

And so they were talking about that. A couple of Statistics that they shared that I think are worth mentioning also is 82% of people work while on vacation.

HIGHLIGHT: 82% people work while on vacation

6:53

And then 50% of people and this would be people that have like a given time off. Unlike us we have to create that 50% of people don’t even use their vacation time yeah which I can’t I just want to be really clear with you if somebody were to painting.

HIGHLIGHT:

7:09 Leadership reflects good business

If you need to walk away and they said you had three weeks this year I’d be like well let me schedule them right now we have those I have what I think is a generous paid time off benefit I appreciate people who don’t take it because it’s expensive.  That is important.  As an employer you know I am not always modeling the behavior that I asked for that is exactly what they said they said how do we do better with in business especially small businesses and they said it’s the leadership down is leadership doesn’t set their email like there’s a way you can set it that emails don’t go out after 10 or 5 or whatever if they don’t set that so they’re still sending emails at 11:12 o’clock people fit every Everybody notices.

HIGHLIGHT:  Leadership reflects good business

8:09

I’m learning to schedule a really really good about not bugging people after hours like I do not I will save like I’ll save alright emails and save them as drafts and then send them the next day I do not engage with our in our project management software cuz it auto email everybody right I get to work pretty early in the morning like set like 6:37 and so it’ll come in then but I don’t do it at a time and you don’t 10 11 12 at night and I’m pretty good about it every once in awhile when something happens especially with ads digital ads I do have to ask a team member after hours and we always do have that conversation but here’s the here’s in the challenge though into.

HIGHLIGHT:

9:07

The day after Thanksgiving Black Friday.

We had a bunch of things supposed to start and happen and it should have been a really quick like they were scheduled in advance should have been a very quick test just to login check and make sure that things had started it turned into two people working for several hours that day and the next day because of other other reasons so now I’m in this position where a I’m grateful that they took care of our clients that was fabulous and be is inappropriate that they did it.

HIGHLIGHT:

9:43 Delegation of tasks in business is a key sign before going on vacation

And I want but it’s I want to be grateful and thankful but I also don’t want to do it so publicly so because you know I want to reward the attitude that the private conversation would not the action because I don’t want other people to think it’s my expectation that’s a private conversation about that I think it’s part of this conversation absolutely and one of the key things that they talked about four people getting away and we’ll talk a little bit about vacation when it needs to get away also the delegation they said really when a person they said it’s one of the Key signs it’s part of the being able to see things better when you’re not in the trenches yeah if you can’t step away for a really clear and you can step away and it keeps running without you that’s a delegation breakdown like you’ve got bigger issues in the business if you can’t step away for two days.

HIGHLIGHT: Delegation of tasks in business is a key sign before going on vacation

10:41

And it keeps going and it and it’s just fine right and you can unplug it and I know I can say that right now to you because I know you’re fixing.

HIGHLIGHT:

10:50

Yeah that bright like the fact that you have to wait, you are taking on too much with your staff so everybody’s jobs shifted and you picked up a whole bunch of things. Yes I know you’ve had a job opening for a while. Hopefully that you’re close to feeling we’ll see if the negotiations as part of it that’s part of it right where you do you mean that’s part of owning a business but that’s a season that should be a season 7 for small business owners which has I think a lot of who listens to us for a lot of small business owners I know I hear this from a lot of people get a funky believe.

HIGHLIGHT:

11:36

But I gotta work hard and I got to be working all the time.

Or it’s just that it’s not going to work out but things are going to fall apart they other people can’t do it as good as me. I got to be the one like I hear a variety of versions of why they can not take.

Three days off together wait why they can’t go and do those things and I.  I’m setting myself up okay to get really vulnerable so about a year-and-a-half ago maybe 2 years ago my therapist challenged this.

HIGHLIGHT:

12:10 Feeling needed and essential to work hard

And she said I really want you to think about why you have that belief and then I want you to think about it. If you’re really.Wanting to not have that belief. And I said what do you mean of course I don’t want to work 24/7 and she said yeah but I think you do. Because I think it’s where you find Value and worth is to feel needed and to feel essential and to feel like they can’t do it without you and until you can overcome that. You won’t be able to let them do it without you and if you can’t let them do it without you.

HIGHLIGHT: Feeling needed and essential to work hard

12:52

Then they’ll never be able to do it without you and I got really pissed because that’s what happens is in good therapy is something that’s really since really true what do you know yeah and then I thought about it for a couple of weeks and we have another session I came back in like okay you’re right there’s a reason therapist like basis out.  It’s true

HIGHLIGHT:

13:25  Ability to trust your teammates

And it and it can stay true because our actions keep it true if not because our teams aren’t ready but because we’re not ready and not because they don’t have the ability the skill the qualifications they might not do it exactly the way that we would do it but they can do it well and trusting who we hired ending their successes as a reflection of our successes is the way through that feeling.

HIGHLIGHT: Ability to trust your teammates

13:58 Identifying self worth and abilities

Has it been easy oh yeah it’s the easiest to know are you kidding me I don’t say oh my God yes I’ve watched hello gifted person a gifted child who became in his group adult and then finally like found something that she was good at that you know she can make a business out of and gets all of this positive reinforcement for it and then all of a sudden tell her she doesn’t need that positive reinforcement that’s not where her value should come from that’s not where herself or should come permission come from somewhere else so crap now you can’t have that anymore because you have to give it away to somebody else that’s been the easiest thing I’ve ever done. I know can we see you again this is why people have resistance to take you all of that like it’s not.

HIGHLIGHT: Identifying self worth and abilities

14:43 Recognizing the barrier

The easiest threshold to cross over but the first step is recognizing that that’s the barrier that it’s not really time or clients or circumstance there are moments in time when it is on Thursday I was not still here because I wanted to feel a higher sense of self-worth on Thursday was here the energy and the other guy cuz I was like I am gone and a mentally I’m trying to get away from here and you were so excited about Louden waited for two months you were you were just like.

HIGHLIGHT: Recognizing the barrier

15:26

So we decided to go on vacation. Is it really a vacation so what did they say about what is and isn’t a vacation so it is true so it gets talked about a word that’s been around for a long time on logging.

Yeah literally literally unplugging you put in the email message that says you know what I won’t be reachable on tell if you have any issues that you need somebody here’s the person contact for this year’s a person says I got my letter from Hogwarts I love that I reach out to this person who totally have delegated out that is really important in crafting that when I would recommend from a coaching perspective crafting that at the beginning of when you’re starting to plan a vacation honestly like right now because then people will reach out to this in all of these because it’s closer you’ll be like oh I don’t know.

HIGHLIGHT:

16:24

No you can give it away I will also.

Point out the first few times you do this I was thinking back to how I decided to get on that bandwagon.

This is funny but anyways it happened you member WorldVentures.

HIGHLIGHT:

16:40

Okay so way way back I don’t remember even early 2000s or something there was a company that you bought vacations from sort of like.  Thing where you would buy an adventure kind of yet.  You wouldn’t pay a monthly payment and then that went Ford’s like you can apply for these things oh yeah but then it was really you should buy subscription but it would really complicated to actually qualify for the vacation think I’m sorry Kohl’s rewards money and stuff like that before it was God awful but in the sales process of that they had accumulated ridiculous amounts of data on how important it was for the brain right and for you to unplug and take these vacation and it wasn’t that. The World Venture Park she was in that process of sending her to the infomercial at that time that I was like. Oh that’s why that’s so like that’s why my body craves it so bad you’re right I didn’t ever and this was before honestly this is at the beginning part of computer.

HIGHLIGHT:

17:50 Learning how to take a vacation

So I wasn’t even as in definitely involved but it was at that moment I was like I think I’m going to have to learn how to take a vacation and I’m working on it since Elizabeth Raven 25 years that I’ve been working on that sounds right like it’s it’s not. They’re different kinds I did take a timeout I went away for three days and I only meant to be unplugged for two of them and that’s okay it is what it is I didn’t have a 4 and I will take it yes I do have a real vacation coming up and I have to decide with the holidays coming we’ve got trip to see family then we’ve got family coming to visit and I’m sitting here trying to figure out how to do all of that and maintain some work and as for talking I’m thinking okay.

HIGHLIGHT: Learning how to take a vacation

18:38

I can do too much badly.

Or I can just call it what it is and say I’m on vacation.

Brawlhalla

Weak. That’s what they said they said he’ll take 70 people. Let’s get this in Europe and China.

HIGHLIGHT:

18:57 Focusing your energy and time for vacation

They take off a month if you’ve ever bought things from China I know anybody that does import export and so forth there’s a whole month they know China will not be available for this whole the two because we have we have a client there who is like if we don’t get them stuff for January by like the 20th or 15th 20th of December we’re not getting ahold of anybody they are literally go nobody’s responding to your email says nobody cares it’s it’s it’s cultural yes yeah and they do they unplugged the unplugged they’re all on vacation and they ask what are you doing what are you doing it’s fake like this is our time it’s kind of like the siesta in Spain I mean people don’t expect things to be open its cultural shift and if you’re walking around at 3 waking people up there looking at you like you’re a psychopath.  Things to learn from others. Come outside so I can say that for me part of what I’ve learned over the years is I take part in why I do motorcycle riding and motorcycle trips.

HIGHLIGHT: Focusing your energy and time for vacation

20:07

I’m sorry you get up in the morning and you need to leave right away usually if I’ve got to put in 304 plus out my life you to leave right away to like make that happen with the motorcycle I’m not answering I’m sorry I’m really busy keeping it on two wheels on it I have to turn in the world. Like being it’s not like being in a car we can trade off driving and go play with your phone and chat with me now.  Camping so now we got to set things up and we need to get to dinner like food needs to happen yeah I’m done navigating crazy drivers and I’m done and I honestly I love that and so like 45 days will go by and I’ve literally had to physically put up roadblocks that’s what that is to make it impossible that’s kind of how I had to start it was like okay and then remember I found the retreat thing. And did that and he cooked meals and I was like oh my gosh and then they didn’t have us do a million different things right I’d only done Retreat there was like it’s a workshop then we’re going to do all day but I listen to have somebody be like here’s two and a half days and we’ll cook the food and you can just do whatever you want and nobody’s going to ask anything of you.

HIGHLIGHT:

21:29

He was like why that was that’s the thing that’s the thing that and that’s you know and again A lot of times there is a lot of times where we trafficking grow stereotypes yes but here’s another one there is no such thing as a staycation for women in Partnership for Women & Families I mean truly the reason I go on Clover treat even though I have a quilt set up at home and I couldn’t easily sit and quilt for 14 hours at home if I lived alone because I don’t live alone it’s just not going to happen and I’m not saying it’s nobody’s fault it’s it’s part of Onslow why it’s my expectation as much as my partner’s expectations because my expectation is I’m in this partnership therefore I’m in this space with my partner therefore we have shared responsibilities in the space there for trade and not individual negotiations up to everybody individually and I don’t want to but in that in that space I have responsibilities to him and one of his needs.

HIGHLIGHT:

22:35 Alone time or “Me Time” is important for mental health

Is to have time with me and salute and when I’m physically there he can see you then I’m mentally there I need to be emotionally there in a way that I can be there when I’m there is by being gone at times because I want that dedicated alone time and I tried to have it at home I really have most people I know it doesn’t work can’t separate right so challenging I would say a true vacation and I when I think back.

HIGHLIGHT: Alone time or “Me Time” is important for mental health

23:07

I have to admit I don’t think I’ve been on a real vacation obviously since before covid I did take a little trip this fall it turned out to be not as good as I wanted it to be I couldn’t unplug it was overwhelming it is different I didn’t work but it was overwhelming in a different way and so it didn’t work for me and going to visit family that’s not a vacation had a week off..  I’ve been helping my brother’s going out of it when you have to force yourself to get into the water cuz you’re just so exhausted just going to like face-planting not a vacation so figure out what it is that you actually like to do figure out if there is somebody you want to do it with totally okay if you don’t want to do it with anybody I’ve meant I actually have we have a variety of friends and business friends separate vacations. And the rent hotel rooms and go away just for 34 days and and just to unplug they ordered room service like yeah I know people that just do that and they work on their business they were big dreams they suggest veg out on television it there’s this great book called Deep work that I’ve talked about before and that’s one of the things that they talked about cuz we need time so I will tell you that every time that I bought a way even on the timeout even for a weekend every time I’ve gone away and I’ve really been able to mentally unplug I come back more creative or problems I die in a better I’m a better owner.

HIGHLIGHT:

24:47 Working during vacation only cost money

You’re a better person you’re better owner or more focused and the title of the podcast is this cost you money and it totally does because when you are in the trenches you cannot see the solution Nazi past this problem right now yet to find the bigger.  Larger patterns and in strategy for overcoming those issues you can’t find it and that’s your job and that’s what’s important for the business to continue to grow and for you to continue to evolve and lead your team right so it starts with you.

HIGHLIGHT: Working during vacation only cost money

25:25

And if you’ve not done this before me to tell you it might not going to happen this year or next year but if you do take steps each year Yahoo bit further along you’ll get there and you can achieve this in a couple of days you can take baby steps baby steps really really walk away.

HIGHLIGHT:

25:44  Delegation of tasks and trusting you’re hired teammates can help you spend vacation wisely

The next time the problem comes in the door and other people start solving it let them and what I promised you is this once you’ve done it and had great success with their delegations and blink once you’ve experienced that you’re like my gosh. I know what this is and I’m not getting what I have wanted out of this and it’s and then I’m not okay with that once you’ve had that you’re like oh I know what this feels like and it’s right good and it’s what’s going to happen and so I think it’ll be wonderful in the coming months when you’re able to take that whole week off my shoulders just felt like a 3-inch I watched it it was good that’s the difference your business needs to make money and so do you and that means you need to figure out how to take a little time off and that needs to be the end of my rent cuz it’s been a little long today thanks for joining us.  We will be learning something gained a few insights and please feel free to.  Are streaming too. Take a vacation and listen to all 100 episodes.
